When you use a template, the first thing you should always do is create a copy and close the original template. Let's take a look at why that's important and how to do it.
One of the great things about digital templates is that they can be used over and over to create different projects. This is why it's important to keep the original template in its original form and only work on a copy of the template. That way you can open the original template anytime you want and use it for another project. So let's go over how to save a copy of a template.
Open the template of your choice. I've opened the same template I used in the last video. You'll find this template called ql-greyscale-template-01.psd in the lesson 1-3 Practice Folder.
In the Menu Bar, choose File, Duplicate. When the dialog box comes up, enter a new name based on the subject of your project. My project is about a baby called Evan. So I'll call my file, Evan Hello World. Click OK to create your duplicate template.
To save the duplicate template, in the Menu Bar, choose File Save as when the dialog box comes up. It will show the new name you gave your duplicate template and it will already be in the right format, which is PSD or Photoshop. So the only thing you'll need to change is the location using your computer navigation. Find the destination folder where you plan to keep this file and click on it to activate it. Alternately, you can create a new folder in the desired location on your computer.
Click Save and now you can safely make any changes to the template because it's a copy and you'll still have the original template available for future use. Now you can activate the original template by clicking on it and choose File, Close to close the original template.
So that's how to duplicate a template save it with a new name and close the original template for future use.
