You already know you can change the font of any type layer. But let me give you some additional tips that will make choosing a font a lot easier. To demonstrate, I'll use a layered file called on-the-road.psd, which you'll find in the Part 7, lesson four practice folder. It has two font layers, and both use a font Arial, which just about any computer would have. If you don't have Arial, you'll get a warning pop up. Just click OK and your computer will substitute a font you do have.
So here are my tips for changing fonts. In the Layers panel, activate the type layer you want to change. You don't need to activate the type itself, just the layer. Get the Type tool and in Tool Options, open the Font menu and choose a new font. If you don't know what font you want to use, you can hover your mouse over a font and try the font out before committing to it. Let's go up a little further here. I'll just scroll up, get out of the Arial part. And so here we have a number of different fonts. And this one's kind of fun. So I'll click on that. This is Architects Daughter.
You can also simply highlight the font name and press the up or down arrow key to move to the next spot. And then when you find one that you like, press Enter to commit the change. Either of these methods is great for trying out various font options when you're not sure which font would look best.
Here's font tip number two. You can change the font of more than one type layer at the same time. Select two or more type layers. And I'll press Shift and click on the bottom type layer to do that. If the layers have different fonts, the font menu will be blank but you can still open the font menu and hover over fonts. And it will change the fonts on your image.
If you know the name of the font, you can type it into the font field. So I'm going to go ahead and do that. Go Bold Regular, and there it is. So I'm going to click on it. Now both layers have the same font.
Tip number three is to change the font of a single word or phrase within a sentence. Highlight the word or words you want to change and choose a new font. I'm going to use a grungy font called 4990810 Regular. And when I apply that, before I actually apply this I'm going to click and drag the textbox a little bit to the left. And that looks better to me. Click on the checkmark to commit the type. And here's the full photo.
So use these tips to make changing fonts a lot easier.
