Take the Quiz
Using the list in the No Nos pdf, can you find three Design No-no’s on this page? (Answers at bottom)
SHOW ANSWERS
- ELEMENTS: Trapped Space
Explanation: Trapped space is an illogical break between two things that should go together. Moving the leaf cluster up with the title will alleviate the trapped space. - ELEMENTS: Shadows Aren’t the Right Size for Where They’re Placed
Explanation: The flat word art strips (with small shadows) are above the bigger 3D string (with a large shadow). The word art strips should be below the string. - TYPE: Journaling with a Decorative Font—Such As a Lacy Script
Explanation: Decorative fonts are meant to be used for titles, which are typically in a larger size that’s easier to read. The best fonts to use for journaling are serif, san serif, and handwriting fonts.

Quiz #2: An Eye for Design
Question One
Is there trapped space between the title cluster on the left and the photo cluster on the right? Why or why not?
Show Answer
Question 1 Answer
No, there is no trapped space. The title cluster is snuggled up against (in close proximity to) the edge of the page. If the title cluster was more in the center of the page, then there would be a big possibility for trapped space.
Question Two
List one or two ways this page demonstrates balance.

Question 2 Possible Solutions
- (blue box) The width of the photo closely resembles the width of the rest of the vertical line.
- (red boxes) The width of the title cluster on the left closely resembles the width of the photo cluster on the right.
Question Three
Use your finger to draw the flow of this page.

Possible Solution
My eye starts at the photo, then travels down slightly to the two word art strips. It then jumps over to the cluster with the title. Finally, it moves to the top of the swirl and then straight down to the photo again. My eye made a triangle.
